‘Nekyia’—from Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey—was the original title of Book XI, which tells the Odysseus’ night sea voyage into the underworld and his encounter with the spirits of the dead. The term was revived in the early twentieth century by the Swiss psychologist Dr Carl Jung to describe a journey into the unconscious psyche.
